As Eric's academic journey advanced, professional development requirements eventually led him to Yenagoa, where he undertook his mandatory six-month Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) placement at St. Peter's Hospital in Amarata. This critical period of hands-on technical training coincided with an unexpected wave of severe civil unrest across the area, triggered by the tragic killing of a local police officer. The surrounding neighborhood quickly turned into an unstable conflict zone, marked by sudden security lock downs, mass arrests, and frequent deployments of tear gas by law enforcement working to restore public order.
During one particularly severe clash, the dispersion of tear gas near the medical facilities became so intense that the chemical exposure caused acute physical distress, leading to temporary blindness and painful respiratory complications for those nearby. Despite these frightening physical conditions—and the deep irony of an innocent student fearing the heavy-handed approach of the authorities more than the criminals driving the unrest—Eric firmly refused to flee his station or abandon his internship. Displaying remarkable resilience, he chose to stay in Amarata to fulfill his training duties, proving his deep commitment to his profession under extraordinary pressure.

Amidst the complex social challenges and volatile external environment of Yenagoa, St. Peter's Hospital provided a vital space for professional growth. This environment was enriched by the guidance of Dei Godsfavour, a highly skilled and experienced Medical Laboratory Technician. Recognizing Eric's focus and passion for learning, Dei Godsfavour provided dedicated mentorship, guiding him through the highly detailed technical frameworks required for clinical laboratory operations.
Under this structured guidance, Eric mastered essential laboratory methods, including diagnostic microscopy, precise sample preparation, biochemical testing, and strict quality control protocols. This focused professional mentorship offered a reliable sanctuary from the chaos outside the hospital walls. It allowed Eric to combine his classroom microbiology theory with vital diagnostic workflows, successfully completing his demanding clinical internship with excellent marks.
The Final Hurdle
The conclusion of his physical training program brought its own challenges. Eric's return journey back to his university campus for his formal industrial training defense was nearly disrupted by a massive regional storm.
